Balmy nights, melting S’mores, and counting fireflies are things many look forward to during the summer season. However, firefly populations have been inconsistent in their appearances during these warm,
enjoyable evenings. Are fireflies disappearing?
The Children’s Science Center, in partnership with the Museum of Science, Boston, and researchers at
Tufts University and Fitchburg State College, have teamed up to help observe and track firefly populations
in our local area. Help us by signing up to be Citizen and Junior scientists to help count fireflies in your
own community.
Together, we can make an impact on vital research needed to learn how to protect fireflies and become good stewards of the environment!
Operation Firefly has ended for 2011. Thank you to all the kids across Northern Virginia who became Citizen Scientists over the summer as part of Operation Firefly!
The Children’s Science Center gratefully acknowledges the support of Don Salvatore, science educator and coordinator of Firefly Watch at the Museum of Science, Boston, in the development of this project in partnership with the Children’s Science Center. The Children’s Science Center respectfully recognizes Mr. Salvatore’s continuing commitment to engaging children in hands-on science learning.
